Maddie Has a Heart (for Duke)
Maddie Howard used to have more pets than years in her age. Only 10-and-a-half years old, she had thirteen animals. She describes herself now as an animal fanatic. It is then no wonder that she was struck with an acute urge to help Duke. The young girl, in fifth grade at Leaphart Elementary School, always sets aside time in bed before she falls asleep to sift through life. One night, during this evening ritual, the thought to support Howlmore and Duke just "popped in [her] mind." To help, she decided to hold a bake sale at her own home to raise money for Duke's surgery. Without aid from Howlmore, she managed to raise money for Duke selling cookies, brownies, and simple baked goods. Such a little girl helped in the biggest way. She helped without needing to or being asked to, and that's why Maddie Has a Heart (for Duke).

Look who else Has a Heart (for Duke)
An angel stopped into the Have a Heart (for Duke) event. This gal heard about the event and decided to take matters into her own hands. Unbeknownst to us, she started a Have a Heart (for Duke) fund on her college campus. With a heart as big as the ocean and a smile as big as Duke himself, our Angel presented us with a coffee can full of cash, and love.

DUKE
The Have a Heart event was a great success. Thank you to all who stopped by to say "hello" and to offer your words of kindness and gifts of generosity. Your gifts are appreciated beyond words. Thank you! Many of you had the joy of seeing Duke, and Duke had the joy of meeting you! Thank you for being a part of what possibly could have been the best day of Duke's life... meeting kind folks like you.

Duke is a five year old mastiff who was one of the very first residents of the sanctuary. Although blind, he learned very quickly to navigate his doggy door and explore his outside run. He loves to go walking and to have visitors. He is very good with adults and children, but he does not get along well with smaller animals, especially cats. Duke became ill last fall, and surgery was required to remove a mass in his abdomen. Surgery was completed in December with an amazingly rapid recovery, but it required us to postpone an ophthalmology appointment. On January 22, the ophthalmologist informed us that Duke has very serious and advanced glaucoma in both eyes. The enormous pressure in his eyes is causing him incredible pain. We immediately scheduled surgery for February 9 and believe this surgery will permanently relieve the pain Duke is experiencing. However, the cost of surgery, hospitalization and treatment in December combined with the projected cost of the eye surgery and follow-up care in February is enormous. While we incur this expense gladly, we remain mindful of the needs of other Howlmore residents. We must provide treatment for all of our special needs residents. For example, Cinnamon our Rotti mix, requires surgery to repair her terribly disfigured feet and legs, enabling her to walk without pain. The impact of so many medical costs in a very brief interval of time causes great concern. Will you help us provide treatment for these loving and special friends? Please contribute to this worthy cause in any way you can.
Please feel free to call (803-609-3888) with any questions or to set up a time to visit Duke at the Sanctuary.
Sincerely,
Linda and Hayden

Love is in the air...
Surgery update... We brought Duke home from surgery Monday night. His doctor says the surgery was a tremendous success. He has prostheses in both eyes and he looks just like Duke would look if he had good eyes! After a few days of healing, Duke will be pain free for the first time in a long time. Right now, he is still pretty groggy and experiencing some discomfort, but the surgeon says that is to be expected. He is on several medications including antibiotics, eye drops and pain meds. He does not like his new accessory--the collar he must wear for awhile to protect his head and eyes. Nonetheless, we are greatly relieved to have the surgery complete and Duke on the road to recovery!
